What is Rabies?

Rabies is a virus also known as lyssavirus and is a preventable viral disease most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system of mammals (dog), ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. Vaccinating dogs, including puppies, is the most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies in people because it stops the transmission at its source.
